Frequently Asked Questions
We are interested in a holistic approach — what does that actually look like?
A holistic approach at Westhampton Counseling Group means looking beyond just symptoms. We explore all aspects of your child’s well-being: emotional health, sleep habits, nutrition, movement, relationships, school dynamics, and family environment. By considering the full picture, we create a customized plan that supports not just symptom relief but true growth and resilience. This comprehensive care often resonates deeply with families who value thoughtful, integrative health practices.
Do you prescribe medication, and how do you approach it?
Yes, we can prescribe medication when it feels truly appropriate — but if so we always approach it with care and caution. We understand that considering psychiatric medication for your child can feel scary and overwhelming. That’s why we focus first on foundational areas like sleep, nutrition, and emotional support. If medication becomes part of the plan, we move slowly, involve you every step of the way, and tailor everything to your child’s unique needs. Our goal is to help your child feel like themselves — not to change who they are.
What ages do you work with?
We specialize in supporting children, adolescents, and young adults — typically ages 4 through early adulthood. We also work closely with parents and families, as we believe family dynamics are a key part of any child’s mental health journey.
How involved will I (as a parent) be in my child’s therapy?
Parents play a vital role. We see therapy as a partnership, not just with your child, but with your entire family system. We keep you updated on progress, provide parent coaching when needed, and include you in sessions as needed to support your own growth and understanding. Our goal is to empower you with tools and insights to support your child outside of therapy as well.
How do you help with academic and executive functioning challenges?
We help children and teens develop practical tools to improve organization, planning, focus, and emotion regulation — often referred to as executive functioning skills. We can also collaborate with schools, tutors, or educational consultants to support academic success and reduce stress at home. This integrative approach helps children build confidence and independence both in and out of the classroom. We have extensive experience collaborating with schools and families in the development of 504 and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
Can therapy help even if my child doesn’t have a formal diagnosis?
Many families seek therapy for challenges like social struggles, big transitions, self-esteem issues, or general stress — even without a formal diagnosis. Therapy can help your child build resilience, develop healthy coping skills, and feel more confident and connected. You don’t need a diagnosis to access support.
Do you offer virtual sessions?
We offer both in-person and secure virtual therapy sessions. Virtual therapy can be a great option for teens with demanding schedules or for parents and families who want the flexibility of care from home.
How do I know if my child or teen needs therapy?
If you’ve noticed changes in your child’s mood, behavior, sleep, social interactions, or school performance — or if they seem overwhelmed, withdrawn, or more emotional than usual — therapy might be a supportive step. We also welcome parents who simply have a gut feeling that something is off. You’re not alone in figuring this out; we’re here to help you explore what’s best for your child.
Do you collaborate with other providers (like pediatricians, nutritionists, or tutors)?
We strongly believe in a team-based, integrated approach to mental health care. We’re happy to collaborate with pediatricians, nutritionists, school counselors, tutors, and any other providers in your child’s support system. This ensures a cohesive, wraparound care experience.
